The call of the artist.

Marina Abramovic
Marina Abramovic – The spirit in any condition does not burn.

The limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind – Marina Abramovich is a performance artist who I have been fascinated with for as long as I can remember. Her work explores the boundaries of body and mind. She has a relentless work ethic, which is something I had myself hooked into when I was studying for exams in my mid teens. I can remember getting into trouble for staying up too late doing homework. My mum would come into my room and take the pens away so I would have to stop and finally get some sleep.

This is a little Piece I wrote when the artist in me started to emerge again…

To commit to the artist, it is necessary to tread carefully. She is vulnerable and intuitively driven, with an insatiable hunger. She takes up every fibre of my being. She makes me selfish, remote, depressed, and liberated, all at the same time. She is exhausting. I cannot sustain her drive to live, breathe and be an artist indefinitely. I do not have that luxury anymore. The force I do battle with to just exist some days will be excavated and named. It will be brought into the light. She is the one brave enough to show it. I need her. I cannot live without her. She is my liberator, my fiercest warrior, my soul speaking truth. I go to her now with my eyes wide and my body broken. She will fix me. She will speak. She will give all that I have. I hope it will be enough.
